Hon. Baba Jamal Calls for Greater Male Involvement in Maternal Health on World Preeclampsia Day

Parliament, Thursday, 22nd May 2026 – The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Baba Jamal M.A., Esq., made a significant contribution on the Floor of Parliament during a statement commemorating World Preeclampsia Day 2026, delivered by Prof. Titus Beyuo under the theme, "Know the Symptoms – Take Action." Speaking on behalf of the Majority Caucus, Hon. Baba Jamal underscored the importance of collective action in addressing maternal health challenges, particularly preeclampsia, which remains one of the leading causes of maternal and neonatal deaths worldwide. During his contribution, the Ayawaso East legislator emphasised that maternal care should not be regarded solely as a woman's responsibility. He urged men to become active partners throughout pregnancy by providing emotional, psychological and physical support to their wives. Hon. Baba Jamal noted that husbands should take a keen interest in their spouses' antenatal care by knowing their clinic appointment dates, observing changes during pregnancy, encouraging regular medical check-ups and creating a supportive home environment. "Men must know their wives' antenatal dates, observe changes during pregnancy, encourage check-ups, and make women feel protected at home," he stated. He further stressed that the quality of care women receive at home has a direct impact on maternal health outcomes and called on men across the country to embrace their responsibilities in safeguarding the health of mothers and their unborn children. The Member of Parliament also paid tribute to doctors, nurses and other health professionals at Nima Polyclinic for their dedication and commitment to maternal healthcare. He disclosed that from January 2026 to date, only one maternal mortality case had been recorded within the constituency, describing the achievement as evidence of the hard work and professionalism of healthcare workers serving the community. In addition, Hon. Baba Jamal reiterated the need for the establishment of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound in Ayawaso East to improve access to primary healthcare and strengthen maternal and child health services within the constituency. Touching on national healthcare infrastructure, the MP dismissed claims that the Government had abandoned the Agenda 111 programme. He argued that the current administration deserves recognition for allocating resources to continue work on legacy health infrastructure projects, including the Agenda 111 hospitals, in order to improve healthcare delivery across the country. Hon. Baba Jamal's contribution reflects his commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare through advocacy, public awareness and strengthened health systems. His call for greater male involvement in pregnancy and childbirth reinforces the shared responsibility of families, communities and government in protecting the lives of mothers and their children.
